A solo dance performance by Pavel Zuštiak & Jaro Viňarský

Archa Theatre - February 7 & 8 / 8:00 p.m.

What does it mean to be in exile? How does exile change a person? What is exile? When does it end? What is the difference between a refugee, an expat, a deportee and an emigrant? Don’t all of us live within some borders?

These and other questions are raised in the solo dance performance Bastard, the first part of a trilogy of projects by Slovak-born New York choreographer Pavel Zuštiak, which explores themes of uprootedness, transformation and otherness, and is inspired by Jerzy Kosiński’s controversial novel The Painted Bird.

"Vinasky is piercing ... Frederickson's score bracing... 'Bastard' is searing."
THE NEW YORK TIMES

“A violent tale, tenderly told: 'Bastard' earns its emotional extremity - with tenderness and quiet.”
FINANCIAL TIMES

"A vivid, often anguished imagination shines through in [Zustiak's] work."
THE NEW YORKER

Concept and choreography: Pavel Zuštiak
Dancer and co-author: Jaro Viňarský

Prague Film and Theater Center is hosting the UK physical and puppet theater company, Smoking Apples, in a combined workshop and performance on Friday, February 3rd at Divadlo Kampa. The evening starts at 18:00 with a workshop "Puppets as Performers", then has a performance at 19:20 of "The Wordcatcher". This is followed by a Q&A with the company. Tickets are 350 Kc for the evening.

During the 1 hour "Puppets as Performers" workshop, the members of this highly acclaimed British theatre company will share their approach to working with puppets with the participants who will then have the opportunity to try it for themselves.

'The Wordcatcher' is a bizarre tale of something and nothing, of sound and of silence both in the heart and in the mind. The Wordcatcher sees its characters try to fix things in place that don’t fit together and through the expert use of miscommunication, the audience will witness how the holes and gaps in this story fill a void rather than leave one.

More information about timing and tickets is here or you can email PFTC for tickets.

We had our first round of orchestra auditions for Sweeney Todd today. We are very excited about how the music is shaping up and about bringing a real, live orchestra to the production. We saw violin, cello, flute and bassoon today. Really great to hear the music and meet new people.

We are still looking for musicians, so if you or someone you know plays clarinet, trumpet, french horn or double bass, please get in touch with us!

We're pleased to announce the upcoming auditions for SWEENEY TODD, a dark American musical thriller by Stephen Sondheim. We are looking for talented singer-actors who want to challenge themselves with this amazing (and amazingly difficult) music. We are also looking for instrumentalists to perform in the orchestra. Please see Emmanuel's post on expats.cz for more details.

The production will be IN ENGLISH, but all nationalities are welcome to audition. It is a great chance to work on a musical with experienced director, vocal coach and choreographer Steve Josephson, who will be coming to Prague to direct. Rehearsals should start March/April and the performances will be June/July 2012. At this point, all roles are open for audition. A list of roles and their vocal ranges (along with other information about the show) is here: http://www.mtishows.com/show_detail.asp?showid=000075 (select "casting" for the roles). The Beggar Woman, Beadle, Pirelli will also be included in the ensemble. We are especially looking for trained ensemble singers who can handle singing in harmony to sing in the chorus.

Auditions will be the week of February 15.
Callbacks will likely be the 18.2 or 19.2.

Please prepare: 2 songs: 1 ballad (slow), 1 uptempo (fast) for the audition. The songs should NOT be from SWEENEY TODD (but other Sondheim shows are welcome) and should show off your vocal range and interpretation. If you have any questions or to schedule an audition, please either email brian@pragueplayhouse.com or SMS/call 608 577 012.

Please pass this on to others who may be interested!

The well-known open-mic talent night and charity event SHOOT YOUR MOUTH is now being produced by experimental theatre company AKANDA in cooperation with the IRON CURTAIN Propaganda pub. Shoot Your Mouth was originally founded in 2009 by Nina Bressler who, until recently, organized the event on a monthly basis at the Iron Curtain. When Bressler realized that due to other professional obligations she no longer had time to devote to the event, she approached Mélanie Rada and Jeff Fritz, Akanda's co-producers, and asked them to take over Shoot Your Mouth. They agreed it was an excellent idea, and the first all-new Shoot Your Mouth will happen next month on the stage of Iron Curtain with a portion of the proceeds going to support the charity My.Water.Org.

In the last months of 2012, Shoot Your Mouth will appear twice:

Sunday 6 November and Sunday 4 December,

Both shows will begin precisely at 19:30 at Iron Curtain - Propaganda pub

If you are interested in the combination of singing and acting, please come to the auditions for the Prague Playhouse's upcoming production of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol". The show will go up mid-November and play until the end of that month. Rehearsals will start at the beginning of October.

Auditions will be on Sunday 18.9. between 14:00 and 16:30 hrs. (2 to 4:30 pm) at the Prague Playhouse Acting Studio, Frantiska Krizka 1, 3rd floor in Prague 7. Please prepare a one-minute-monologue and a christmas carol to show your ability to tell a story through the song! To schedule an audition, please text/call Laura on 776 605 227!

We are doing something a little different with this one: We are going to have a small cast of players which will function as something like a Greek chorus: They will sing 19th century christmas carols as mood/commentary on what is going on in the play. When the scenes require it, they will step out of the chorus and act all of the characters in the play (besides Scrooge). It should be fun and challenging ensemble work for actor/singers.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the auditions!

admin on "Acting Studio Summer Workshops"

The Prague Playhouse Acting Studio will be offering three workshops this summer:

Unlocking Shakespeare with Guy Roberts. This workshop will delve into Shakespeares text and give you a solid basis for starting to work on the text as an actor. This workshop will expand on the weekend Guy spent in October by allowing for time to put the work on the text into practice by getting students up and working on several speeches. Guy Roberts is the artistic director of the Prague Shakespeare Festival and has acted in and directed many Shakespeare plays. He has taught this workshop around the United States including at Princeton University. The workshop will be June 3, 4 and 5th (Friday 18:00 - 22:00, Saturday and Sunday 10:00 - 14:00). The workshop costs 3.000 Kc.

On Camera Workshop with Nancy Bishop. Nancy Bishop, Prague's premiere casting director for Hollywood films with more than 40 movies under her belt, is bringing her On Camera Workshop back to Prague with a special price for locals. Her workshop will cover how to interact with the camera, how to make choices that work on camera, how to take direction and much more. This two day workshop runs July 18 and 19 and costs 4.000 Kc.

Intensive Summer Acting with Brian Caspe. This two week workshop will cover acting fundamentals and give beginning actors a foundation in the craft of acting. As an intensive course, the Summer Acting Intensive will allow students the opportunity to really focus on the acting: listening, forming a connection to their partner, being able to be open to what's going on around them. This approach to acting is extremely well suited to working on camera as it removes any sense that the actor is "acting" but rather "being". The course will run from July 20 - 31 from 10:00 - 17:00 (including a 1 hour break). The course costs 6.450 Kc.

To sign up for the courses, please contact Brian at brian@pragueplayhouse.com

Hi everybody!

At long last a word from me, Boris Wilke, alumni of Brian Caspe's Prague Playhouse Acting Studio.

I'd like to invite you all to go see plays at the Prague Fringe this year, which will start this coming Friday, May 27th. For nine days more than 40 plays will be performed in nine venues. The style will vary wildly. But all will be a fresh alternative to traditional theater. The price of 150 Crowns for each play should also be enticing.

I will be in a play, too. It's called "Hotel Red Cello". It's a collage of monologues full of desire, clashes between these soliloquizing loners that really long to be with someone and video-projections that combine all the elements into a juicy whole.

If you want to know a little more, read on!

Prague Shakespeare Festival returns to Vysehrad Castle's Summer Stage for 10 days and 2 new shows. After a 3 week run in Houston, Texas that received rave reviews, the company is back in Prague to share this year's work: As You Like It and King Lear. The outdoor setting, complete with beer, sausages, and a wonderful atmosphere, is the perfect backdrop for experiencing the Bard's work. The shows run May 19 - May 29.

This year is a particularly exciting project as it brings top Houston talent together with Czech artists, including Czech superstar Pavel Kříž.

Guy Roberts, Artistic Director of the Prague Shakespeare Festival says, "I am delighted to be working with such tremendously talented artists on this inspiring project. United by the universality of Shakespeare's plays our company of European and American theatre artists, led by Czech favorite Pavel Kříž, will be giving audiences in Prague something very special indeed-two of Shakespeare's most beloved plays performed in English by an outstanding collection of professional theatre artists in the beautiful setting of the Vyšehrad summer stage."

Michael Gimenez, a visual artist whose work is based on confrontation and research around representation formats and their boundaries, is working on a project which will have a group exhibition in the City Gallery of Montpellier, in France, opening on May 27. The main concept of this project is to confront two different kinds of formats: on-line writing and cinema vocabulary. He will make use of a serial of comments collected from an USA Today webpage article as an original dialog text. He considers writing a comment or chating on-line as an original way of expression, between live conversation and writing. Interested?
Ladies and gentlemen, whether you like it or not, theatre AKANDA proudly presents HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH. This groundbreaking Off-Broadway cult musical tells the story of punk rock song stylist Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth-wall smashing East German rock ‘n’ roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a sex-change operation gone wrong. This outrageous story is presented in the form of a rock concert and stand-up comedy routine of the blackest style. The action is moved along by Hedwig and her husband Yitzhak, a former Yugoslavian drag queen, and backed up by hard-rocking band The Angry Inch. Hedwig's tale begins in East Berlin just before the downfall of Communism and then moves through the bleak landscapes of Midwestern America as she searches for wholeness and self-completion. Her saga finally culminates right here right now in a glam-spattered cellar in the center of Prague... easily one of the most perverse and unexpectedly beautiful stories ever told.

We are going to be having auditions for our upcoming production of "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown" on March 19 and 20. The show is a fun, silly musical based on the Peanuts cartoon. All of the characters are children played by adults. We are looking for singing actors: there is quite a bit of harmony in the group numbers. There is some dance/movement as well. All actors should be fairly fluent in English.

If you are interested, please write to me (brian@pragueplayhouse.com or 608 577 012) for an audition time (please state whether you would like to come Saturday or Sunday). Prepare a 1-2 minute comedic monologue and 32 bars of a song. There will not be a piano at the auditions so please be prepared to sing A-Capella or bring an instrument with you.

The roles are:

Charlie Brown: Baritone
Lucy: Alto
Snoopy: Tenor
Linus: Baritone
Schroeder: Tenor
Patty: Soprano

Rehearsals will begin at the end of March and there will be 6 performances in May (May 13,14,20, and 21).

Thanks and hope to see you at the audition!

admin on "Divadlo Na Zabradli To Produce Play In English"

David Peimer, who teaches at NYU and has worked on several Prague Playhouse projects, is directing a play at Divadlo Na zabradli in English. The cast is mostly Czechs with some of the Black Snow company members thrown in for good measure. The play, a translation of a Polish play about Romanians, is called "A Couple of poor Polish speaking Romanians…" and was written by Dorota Maslowska.

Why Divadlo Na zabradli chose to do a translation of a Polish play into English for their first English-language production is something of a mystery to me, but it's certainly an interesting choice. If it is successful (especially with tourists), I think we can start to see more theaters trying this out, which could be a boon to the English-speaking acting community here. I'm also curious to see how the Czech cast (the majority of the actors are non-native speakers) manages the English. Recent films shot in English (Bathory and Libuse) with Czech or Slovak casts have solidified my impression that acting well in another language is extremely difficult.

I have worked with David as a director and am very confident of his abilities and artistic sensibility, so if anyone can pull this off, he can.

The premier on June 3 is sold out, but there are still some spots left for the reprise on June 15. For tickets, you can call the Zabradli box office: 222 868 868

Hi everyone!

I’m Boris Wilke and member of the Prague Playhouse Meisner acting group. I blog about our class activities.

***************

Let me be short and concise again today!

In the last few weeks there were several incidents in class that led certain members to become slightly wary of the Meisner technique.

Some of the repetition exercises bordered on the insane, vicious or at least very insensitive.

While I am aware that that is mighty scary and leaves one unsatisfied, I must insist that this has very little to do with the technique. In fact, Brian rightly pointed out to me that the Meisner technique provides you with all the tools you need.

One example: I felt attacked and cornered once. My reaction was to withdraw into "critic mode" and to lament my partner had not played by the rules. (I was being Meisner-righteous. That's an expression Tzvi came up with.)

But in fact, there are no rules, except this one: No physical violence.

So let me present you with a remedy to feeling bad about the technique: Be Meisneritious!

Hi everyone!

I’m Boris Wilke and member of the Prague Playhouse Meisner acting group. I blog about our class activities.

***************

Let me be short and concise today!

I am totally thrilled about Mark Wakeling's return to Prague in a month. In case you haven't heard of him: He is a teacher at the "Actor's Temple" in London. He held a weekend-seminar in late November of 2009 for us Meisner students at the Prague Film School. (Click here to read about it!) Now he promised to be back from June 7 to 11.

The seminar last year rocked my soul. It helped me keep on keeping on at this difficult time, where none of my efforts at getting started as a professional actor really seem to succeed. His version of Meisner also kept me from dropping out of this class. I have been looking forward to his oncoming seminar ever Brian started to talk about it, i.e. at least four months.

If you can afford it and have the time, please register for the seminar!

Mark will try his best to confront you with the inner barriers you set up to protect yourself against intense feelings. He is relentless in a way. But since Meisner is about the truth, it is absolutely necessary to get rid of these blocks. Mr. Wakeling will get you at places you wouldn't even have known existed. If you trust him at least a little bit, he will help you free quite a bit of the aspects you carefully held captive inside for so long. You will shine!

Meisner is about getting ready to play anything - no! to be able to live it under imaginary circumstances. If you dare use the technique to the extreme - which Mark will help you with - it will get you there.

Mr. Wakeling will give you a good kick in the butt that will let you fly in the right direction.

He will take Meisner's image of "the pinch and the ouch!" in a totally new and really pinchey-ouchey direction.

And that is absolutely, mind-bogglingly exiting to me.

**********************

General stuff:

Our acting class consists of some twelve new and not so new active members, who meet every Monday and Wednesday from 6.30 pm to about 9.30 at the Prague Film School. We do Meisner. And the Meisner-technique really rocks!

If you want to connect with your inmost feelings, expressing them freely in an acting environment and thus getting to know yourself better and better, feel free to join us! If you do, be prepared for some serious thrills!

Well, folks, the 2010 Expats.cz and Prague.tv Playwriting Contest is behind us now. As I said at the Awards Ceremony, it simply would not have happened without all of the folks that donated their time to acting or directing, working behind the scenes and out with the public, to the folks that came to see it and voted for the winner of the audience award. The sponsors really came through in a big way as well and helped us with everything from a place to play, to advertising, to props, to prizes for the participants.

There are simply too many people to thank, but I want everyone to know that there is no way that any of this would happen without you!

Without further ado, I would like to congratulate Cohen Ambrose, who won the jury prize for Best Play for his piece "Hole in the Wall". The award was based on the revised script and not the realization of the play. Julek Neumann and company won the audience award for Josh Kaston's play "The Great Indoors". The judging was fierce and the three finalists were really really close. Any one of the plays could have won the final prize. We are really indebted to all of the writers who submitted their work to the contest and hope that whether you won or not, you take the opportunity to push your work to the next level.

After the break, I just wanted to put down a few words about why we do the contest in the first place: why it was started and whether we will continue to do it.

Today's discussion in both the day class as well as the evening class centered around the concepts of Risk, Passion and Imagination. The three ideas came up in the context of doing Meisner exercises and how they relate to actual work. Lately in the class, people have been feeling like the exercises are pretty divorced from the work. The main thing to remember is that these exercises are kind of like finger exercises on a piano: they form the backbone of any more complex work; they are the framework that holds the artistry together.

While I wouldn't necessarily apply a Meisner exercise directly to a problem in working with a text (although it's perfectly legitimate to do so, even with early work like repetition and activities), the underlying concepts that those exercises are training -- listening and attention for repetition, the reality of doing for activities -- are directly applicable to working with a text in the "real world".

If you've been holding out on coming to the 2010 Expats.cz and Prague.tv Playwriting Contest performances, your last chance is Tuesday, March 30th at 18:30. We moved the time up an hour to make room for the Awards Ceremony and after party which you're invited to. There will be free food and drink thanks to Troja Catering!

There are tickets still available, but I would highly recommend ordering beforehand online (you can pay for them at the door) as it is likely to sell out.

The show is at Divadlo Ponec (Husitska 24a in Prague 3).

Tickets for the final night are 280 Kc general / 250 Kc students and seniors.

There are still tickets available, so get yourself down to Divadlo Ponec (Husitska 24) by 19:30 to join in this celebration of local writers. If you're not available tonight, you still have 2 more chances: Saturday night at 19:30 (tickets for this are going fast, so book now!) and Tuesday night, which includes the closing night awards ceremony and party catered by Troja Catering. Both shows will be really well attended, so don't be lazy about getting tickets!

I have to say that I am really proud of all of the participants in this year's contest. We have really seen a lot of growth in the contest since the beginning 4 years ago. There have been challenges, sure, but they have been overcome and the result is a wonderful testament to local artists creating theater. Come out and support it!

Czech film company, Duracfilm, announces a casting call for a short education film part funded by the Danish Foreign Ministry.

We are looking for:

We are open to both Czech or English speaking actors - the decision hasn't been made on whether the film will be shot in English or Czech. Either way, we are looking for a Danish accent to whichever of the two languages is spoken. An English or Czech speaking Dane, Swede or Norwegian would be ideal.

There is no age limit. Nor is there any particular look we are searching for.

The part:

The role to be auditioned for is Kohl Larsson, a disaffected ex-power station worker who is appealing for asylum in the Czech Republic on Ecological grounds. Kohl is a man who likes his coal. He’s not happy about the changes that have taken place in his country over the last twenty years, wind turbines, solar power stations, passively heated housing and is seeking asylum in the Czech Republic, a country he sees as more in tune with his way of life.

Filming dates:

There will be three days of shooting, two in Denmark and one in the Czech Republic. We will be filming either in the week following the Easter weekend (6th - 11th April) - or the following week (11-18th April).

Pay:

Unfortunately the funding available from the Danish government for this project is very small. All the crew will be working well below industry norms. We can offer 1,500 kc cash a day, plus a delayed payment of an extra 1,500 kc a day should we be successful in selling the film to a commercial television company in this country.

There's a return flight to Copenhagen and two nights in a hotel there included in the film’s budget. If you'd like to fly out earlier or stay on after the shoot and have an extended stay, we've no problem with that (though we can't cover the extra hotel nights).

The casting will take place at the offices of Duracfilm, Turnovská 365/5, Praha 8, on Monday March 15th. Please contact Pavlina Kalandrova, the producer, 724 328 583 or pavlina@duracfilm.cz to arrange a time for an audition and to receive copies of the texts to be read.
